Kama Sutra and celebacy
October 15 , 2007
Hare Krishna,
and thank you so much for your question
"Why Celibacy."
The Supreme Lord is situated in everyone's heart and is fulfilling our desires since time immemorial through His various potencies. Those living entities who are situated in His external material energy are generally trying to enjoy life utilizing their material senses, neglecting their true spiritual nature. Unfortunately, when we exploit this material nature for sense gratification we fall under the illusion that we are this body. Because of this bodily misconception we are deprived of our true spiritual nature which is eternal, knowledgeable and full of bliss.
The whole point of spiritual life is to gradually enlighten us to the stage of full realization of our true spiritual self. Lord Krishna wants us to enjoy on the spiritual platform, where life is eternal and not subjected to the miseries created by bodily misidentification. To that end one is recommended to restrain from those activities which reinforce a bodily misconception, or which sex is the most prominent.
If you carefully read Bhagavad-gita you will find that Krishna, while directing us to curtail bodily misidentification by taking up a regulated life of spiritual practice, does not prohibit sex life. In fact He states that He is that sex life that is not contrary to religious principles. So although sex life is regulated, and celibacy is recommended at certain stages of our lives, at others it is allowed. The main point is to gradually mold all our activities in such a way that we bring to an end our entanglement in material life which is just a miserable state of affairs to the pure spirit soul.
Celibacy, and sex life practiced under regulation, as all meant bring us to the state of spiritual happiness.
I sincerely hope that you continue to inquire into the teachings of Bhagavad-gita, and hope this explanation has been helpful.
Sincerely,
