Anyone can become guru
November 12 , 2007
Hare Krishna,
Lord Caitanya, Krishna's manifestation as His pure devotee, who appeared 500 years ago in India to inaugurate this Sankirtan movement gave specific instruction on who was a bonafide guru. His explained that one who fully understood the science of Krishna Consciousness was qualified to become guru. He make no distinction as to their station in life, married, unmarried, brahmana, sudra.
yare dekha, tare kaha 'krishna'-upadesa
amara ajnaya guru hana tara' ei desa
TRANSLATION
"Instruct everyone to follow the orders of Lord Sri Krishna as they are given in the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. In this way become a spiritual master and try to liberate everyone in this land."
kiba vipra, kiba nyasi, sudra kene naya
yei krishna-tattva-vetta, sei 'guru' haya
TRANSLATION
"Whether one is a brahmana, a sannyasi or a sudra -- regardless of what he is -- he can become a spiritual master if he knows the science of Krishna."
Of course you are correct that one of the symptoms of a pure devotee is his giving up all material attachments and taking full shelter of Krishna's lotus feet. However, there is no restriction in anyone and everyone doing so, no matter what their material situation.
When you find that ideal devotee who fully inspires you in spiritual life, take firm hold and shelter of their lotus feet and divine instructions. Do not be concerned with their material situation, rather judge their spiritual qualification.
Sincerely,
Dulal Chandra dasa
